Garuda Indonesia’s Baggage Rules Have Changed: A Packing Checklist for Students Travelling Overseas
Starting university overseas often means travelling with more than ordinary holiday luggage: documents, clothes for a different climate, learning devices, and personal essentials.
Garuda Indonesia introduced the Piece Concept for checked baggage on tickets purchased or issued from 1 September 2026. The allowance is based on the number of bags permitted and the maximum weight for each bag, rather than only the combined total weight.[1][2]
What Is the Piece Concept?
Your e-ticket will state the number of checked bags included, the maximum permitted weight for each bag, and relevant size and travel conditions.
An acceptable combined weight may still fail the allowance if one suitcase exceeds its individual limit or if the number of bags exceeds the entitlement.
Garuda Indonesia states that the policy applies to tickets purchased or issued from 1 September 2026 for Garuda Indonesia-operated flights.[2] Tickets issued before that date may follow the previous system, so students should check their own e-ticket.[1]
Why Should Students Check Their Baggage Allowance?
Students travelling overseas for study often carry more belongings than typical travellers. Common mistakes include:
- weighing all belongings together instead of each suitcase;
- bringing more bags than the ticket allows;
- transferring excess items to cabin baggage without checking the rules;
- placing documents and electronic devices in checked baggage;
- assuming every airline or route uses the same conditions.
Baggage rules vary by airline, route, travel class, and ticket product. IATA advises travellers to check the rules directly with their airline.[3]
Student Packing Checklist
1. Check Your E-ticket First
Review the number of bags, weight limits per bag, cabin allowance, airlines for every flight segment, transit airports, and any route-specific conditions. If you are flying with more than one airline, confirm the baggage rules for the full journey.
2. Weigh Each Suitcase Separately
Use a digital luggage scale and leave a small weight buffer. Save each suitcase’s weight on your phone so you do not need to repack at the check-in counter.
3. Prioritise First-week Essentials
Bring items that are personal, important, or difficult to replace immediately:
- clothing for the arrival season;
- personal medication and relevant prescriptions;
- glasses or personal healthcare essentials;
- a universal adaptor and chargers;
- laptop and essential study items.
Choose versatile clothes. Bulky items that are easy to buy after arrival do not need to fill your suitcase.
4. Keep Important Items in Your Cabin Bag
Never place your passport, visa, study documents, laptop, bank cards, medication, or chargers in checked baggage.
Keep these in your cabin bag: passport, visa, Letter of Offer or Confirmation of Enrolment, accommodation confirmation, itinerary, evidence of funds if required, laptop, phone, chargers, compliant power bank, bank cards, reasonable cash, and emergency contacts.
Create secure digital copies of important documents in cloud storage or a secure email account.
5. Check Power-bank and Smart-luggage Rules
Smart bags with lithium batteries are permitted only if the battery can be removed; the battery must then be carried in hand luggage. A smart bag with a non-removable battery may not be accepted as checked or cabin baggage, depending on airline rules.[3]
Check your power-bank capacity and the airline’s latest requirements before travelling.
6. Label Your Luggage and Arrive Early
Add a luggage tag with your name, active phone number, and email address. Photograph the outside and contents of each suitcase before departure.
Garuda Indonesia advises international passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure. Students should allow extra time for document checks, immigration, and possible baggage issues.[4]
Final Checklist
- E-ticket baggage allowance checked
- Each suitcase weighed separately
- Number of bags matches the ticket
- Passport, visa, and study documents are in cabin baggage
- Power-bank and smart-luggage rules checked
- Luggage labels and photos prepared
- Airport transport and emergency contacts saved
