University of Toronto Lester B. Pearson Scholarship: A Nomination Guide for Indonesian Students

For Indonesian students aiming for an undergraduate degree in Canada, the Lester B. Pearson International Student Scholarship at the University of Toronto (U of T) is a scholarship that demands early planning. U of T calls it its most prestigious award for international students and one of its most competitive scholarships. Selection recognises a combination of outstanding academic achievement, creativity, leadership potential, and the potential to contribute positively to the global community.[1]

This is not a pathway completed by simply sending a personal application near the end of an admissions cycle. You need a nomination from your secondary school, an application for admission to U of T, and then a Pearson application through a private link issued after nomination and submission of the admission application.[1]

What does the Pearson Scholarship cover?

For selected recipients, U of T states that the Pearson Scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years. Its official page lists 37 scholars annually and more than C$12 million in funding in 2024.[1]

That coverage is substantial, but students should not assume every personal expense or travel need is included. Ask U of T directly about the detailed coverage, residence conditions, any remaining costs, and recipient obligations for your intended intake year.

Who can apply?

For the currently listed cycle, the Pearson Scholarship is for international students—non-Canadians who require a study permit—who are in their final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027 or have graduated no earlier than June 2026. Applicants must also begin studies at U of T in September 2027.[1]

U of T explains that students already attending post-secondary studies, or students starting post-secondary studies in January 2027 at U of T or another institution, are not eligible for the Pearson International Scholarship.[1]

Because school status, graduation timing, and start-date plans can determine eligibility, students should not rely on third-party summaries. Confirm your individual situation with U of T admissions and your school before setting an application strategy.

School nomination: the step you cannot skip

Each high school may nominate one student per year. That makes an early conversation with your counsellor, principal, or head of school essential.[1]

For September 2027 entry, previously participating schools receive access to the nomination form from 6 July 2026, and the student-nomination deadline is 9 October 2026. If a school has not previously participated, it can apply to join the programme by noon EST on 9 October 2026.[1]

This means applicants need to prepare a substantive nomination case. Strong grades matter, but the Pearson profile also highlights creativity, leadership, and positive impact. Gather specific evidence: projects you led, sustained contributions, explainable results, your role in a team, and reflections on what you learned from challenges. Do not inflate activities; a strong school recommendation must be supported by an honest track record.

Timeline for 2027 entry

After securing nomination, you must still apply for admission to at least one U of T undergraduate programme. The deadline to apply for admission and be considered for Pearson is 16 October 2026, for studies beginning in September 2027.[1]

U of T allows applicants to choose up to three areas on their admission application. However, if the Pearson Scholarship is awarded, it is restricted to the top-choice programme at the time scholarship decisions are made.[1]

Once your school has nominated you and you have submitted an admission application, U of T will issue a private Pearson application link. The deadline to complete the Pearson application and submit all required documentation is 6 November 2026.[1]

Work backwards from the dates: arrange a school meeting early, collect transcripts and activity evidence, complete the admission application before its deadline, then leave sufficient time for the Pearson application. Do not wait for the private link before preparing the elements you can work on in advance.

Building a stronger profile

  1. Academics: maintain consistent academic results and understand the requirements for your chosen U of T programme.
  2. Leadership: explain your actions, responsibilities, and impact—not only a student-organisation title.
  3. Creativity: show how you saw or addressed a problem through an original and relevant approach.
  4. Contribution: choose activities that demonstrate tangible value for your school or community.
  5. Application narrative: connect your experience, programme choice, and future contribution logically without making promises you cannot substantiate.
