Diablo Valley College: A Leading Feeder College for Transfer to UC Berkeley and US Universities
For Indonesian students planning to study in the United States, a community college can be a strategic starting point. Students can begin their studies, complete foundational and major-preparation courses, and later apply to transfer to a four-year university.
One option in California is Diablo Valley College (DVC). With campuses in Pleasant Hill and San Ramon, DVC lists 279 degrees and certificates, including transfer and career-education programmes.[1]
DVC and the UC Berkeley Transfer Pathway
DVC describes itself as the #1 California Transfer Institution for UC Berkeley.[6] Its own visa guidance also states that DVC continues to be the number one transfer school to UC Berkeley.[7]
This makes DVC relevant for students who are considering UC Berkeley as a future transfer destination. However, a feeder-college position does not mean that transfer admission is automatic. Students still need to plan their courses carefully, build a competitive GPA, meet major-preparation requirements, and complete the transfer application process.
UC Berkeley reports that 91.5% of admitted transfer students for Fall 2025 came from California community colleges.[8]
What Is a Community College Pathway?
Community colleges offer associate degrees, certificates, and courses that can support preparation for a four-year university transfer.
At DVC, students choose an interest area and a degree or certificate programme. The college also offers transfer programmes, Associate Degrees for Transfer, and transfer-planning support.[2][6]
For students starting general-education coursework after Fall 2025, DVC states that Cal-GETC is the general-education pattern for transfer to CSU and most UC campuses. Course planning should still be confirmed with a counsellor, as requirements vary by major and destination university.[6]
Study Areas to Explore
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- Computer Science and Information Technology
- Engineering
- Biological, Physical, and Environmental Sciences
- Psychology and Social Sciences

A degree choice should reflect academic strengths, career direction, and the requirements of the intended transfer major.
Support for International Students
DVC has an International Student Office for prospective F-1 students and international transfer students.[2][3]
Active F-1 students must enrol in at least 12 units, including at least 9 units delivered in person or through hybrid courses.[3] DVC also provides orientation, educational planning, Math and English placement guidance, and resources related to housing and student adjustment.
DVC also lists an International Transfer Academic Program, known as the 1+1+2 Pathway. Eligible students may begin online from their home country, spend one year at DVC, and then apply to transfer to a four-year US university.[3] It is an academic option with specific requirements, not a guarantee of admission to a destination university.
Estimated Cost of Study
For the 2026–2027 academic year, DVC lists an estimated total annual cost of US$30,495 for international students. The estimate includes tuition for 24 units, homestay-based food and housing, books, transportation, personal expenses, and mandatory medical insurance.[4]
DVC lists international tuition at US$447 per unit.[5] Actual costs may change based on enrolment, housing, personal needs, and current college policies.
