The Digital SAT can be an important part of applications to many universities, particularly in the United States. In addition to understanding Reading and Writing and Math content, students should know the test format and develop an effective question-taking strategy.
There is no shortcut that guarantees a high score. However, focused practice, sensible time management and familiarity with the test tools can help students work more calmly and efficiently. Here are 10 Digital SAT tips to use during preparation and on test day.
1. Manage Your Time in Each Module
The Digital SAT includes a timer that students can show or hide. According to College Board, students have an average of about 1 minute 11 seconds per Reading and Writing question and 1 minute 35 seconds per Math question.
If one question is taking too long, use Mark for Review, continue with the module and return later if time remains. This prevents one difficult question from consuming time needed elsewhere.
2. Use the Highlight and Notes Tools
Reading and Writing uses short passages followed by one question each. Use annotation selectively to identify the main idea, transitions, supporting evidence, shifts in viewpoint and keywords in the question.
3. Do Not Guess from Answer Patterns
A series of A, B, C or D answers does not determine what comes next. Evaluate each question on its own evidence. Use the Option Eliminator to cross out clearly incorrect choices before comparing the remaining options.
4. Move Around Within a Module
The Digital SAT is adaptive, but the questions are set once a module begins. Students may move between questions within the same module. Answer questions you can solve efficiently, mark the time-consuming ones and return before the module ends. You cannot return to a completed module.
5. Do Not Overthink Question Difficulty
Trying to classify every question as easy, medium or hard wastes time. Focus on the information provided, choose an appropriate method and review your answer if time allows.
6. Avoid Leaving Questions Blank
If you are uncertain, make an educated guess. Your chances improve after eliminating one or two options that clearly fail to answer the question, contradict the passage, produce an unreasonable result or use the wrong units.
7. Learn to Use the Desmos Calculator
The Math section includes an integrated Desmos graphing calculator. It can help with equations, function graphs, intersections, systems and graphical analysis. It does not replace conceptual knowledge, so practise deciding when Desmos is faster and when manual work is simpler.
If you prefer your own calculator, check the approved-calculator rules and practise with the same device beforehand.
8. Take a Full-Length Bluebook Practice Test
Complete at least one official full-length test in Bluebook. This builds familiarity with the interface, timing, module transitions, Mark for Review, the built-in calculator and the concentration required for the full test.
Recreate test conditions: put away your phone, follow the official time limits and avoid checking explanations until you finish.
9. Focus Practice on Your Weakest Skills
Do not look only at the total score after a practice test. Classify errors by cause: missing knowledge, misreading, carelessness, poor time management, unfamiliar question types or ineffective calculator use.
Review questions through Bluebook and My Practice. Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy and skill-based practice can help strengthen specific areas.
10. Look After Yourself Before Test Day
Avoid studying late into the night immediately before the test. Sleep well, eat beforehand, prepare your device and documents early, charge the battery and arrive on time.
If a difficult question appears, stay calm and use the strategy you have practised. One question does not determine your entire result.

Digital SAT Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Digital SAT adaptive?
Yes. It uses a module-adaptive format. Performance in the first module helps determine the difficulty of the following module.
Can students return to previous questions?
Students may return to questions within the current module. They cannot return after the module has ended.
Is it better to guess or leave an answer blank?
It is better to answer, particularly after eliminating choices that are clearly wrong. Do not base a decision on perceived answer-letter patterns.
Where can students take official Digital SAT practice tests?
Official full-length practice tests are available in Bluebook. Results can be reviewed through My Practice, with additional learning through Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy.
Conclusion
Digital SAT preparation involves more than memorising formulas or expanding vocabulary. Students also need to understand the format, manage time, use the digital tools, analyse mistakes and protect their wellbeing before test day.
