What Is the Year One Foundation Program?
The Year One Foundation Program forms the first year of a four-year bachelor's degree, so students do not add extra time to their journey towards graduation. After completing the program and meeting the progression requirements, they continue directly into the second year of an available bachelor's degree.
This route is designed for international students who would benefit from a more structured transition into Canadian education. Alongside degree-relevant subjects, students receive support that helps them strengthen academic skills, become independent learners, and adjust to university life.
More than 100 majors offer guaranteed progression from the Year One Foundation Program, subject to the requirements of each route. Students who need further English-language preparation may also take English for Academic Purposes before progressing to the foundation program.
Studying and Living in Edmonton
U of A offers a large international community and a modern campus environment. Students can use Canada's second-largest research library, join hundreds of clubs, and develop networks through academic, cultural, sporting, and community activities.
Edmonton combines the facilities of a major city with a relatively affordable cost of living. The city offers many sunny days, public transport connecting the campus and downtown, and a wide range of museums, restaurants, sporting venues, and outdoor spaces. This gives students a complete Canadian experience both inside and outside the classroom.
